Just for Quitters brings you a new idea and how you can make it improved business that can be operated from you dinning room, or your basement if your married!

How to Start your Own Retail Sign Business

From your trip into work or your trip to the unemployment line, or your trip to that university with hard chairs and a professor that can put you to sleep quicker than Advil Pm, you see signs everywhere.  Stop, Open House, For Sale, Special, Buy Now, 0% Financing Until 2010, Coffee, Free, Limited Time Only, ect. You get the point.

It’s the small business owner life line in a world full of quick advertising, large coffee’s and no time to pull out the Yellow Book, it is the small business owners only chance to lure you in, so they can make a sale!

Most of these signs could have been purchased via the Internet, Craig list, eBay,  but I guarantee that a local business person would rather buy from a local business.

With technology, today you can take your new sign business to the next level. The old painted signs are still in operation but this will be a small part of your business. Today you can print and apply and fill in the lines making you look like a fortune 500 company. A ready print sign that could cost you $5 to $10 dollars you could probably sell for $25 to $50 dollars. You could even have room to hire a salesman and pay him a percentage and still break a profit. Depending on the sign your salesman could sell 3 or 4 to the same business. Win/Win

After you read this blog, grab your phone book or google search local sign companies. There shouldn’t be many, get your pad/pen and call and start to get your future competition’s prices. This can start to get the motivation bone twitching and you can have a good starting point. You can’t go to Wal-Mart or Home Depot and get a high quality sign for your business.

Small business buy all their signs from sign companies and walking salesmen who buy straight from some factory.

Is IT FOR ME?

This business can be operated by a student, stay at home mom, working mother and father young, retired. It would be best to put together a catalog or portfolio that you can carry with you as you parade around town doing your shopping. This is my special gift, take a small pad folio full of your work or work to be and spark up conversation with everybody you run into. I was scared to do this as a Real Estate Agent but heck, we are all in line waiting staring at the bad kids in line (usually mine). In your case with your new Sign Business, ask who the owner of the business is, do they have a card, can you call. If your in a small hometown business not a big box retailer chances are the owner is working. BOOM you have your samples. Just think that burnt coffee that was 4 dollars could of made you have a life time client.

Go to Wal-Mart and go buy the binders of paper in a little black poke-a-dotted notebook usually they are a dollar or two. Write on the top of the pages each client that you expect to approach or call. Each time you contact them write a short note of who, when, what you discussed when you talked. Try to set an appointment. We all hate cold calling but here was a trick a mentor told me. Think of all the No’s you get and write them down separated. Once you get a sale, calculate your net profit. Now how many calls did you make? Divide that by your sale. So if I secured a client and he bought 10 signs off of me and I netted after expenses 25 dollars a sign. You made $250 dollars! Say you made 20 phone calls and 1 bought. My mentor then told me that I actually made $13.16 every single rejection. A positive spin in deed. I was pumped to be rejected because I knew I would be rewarded with my persistence.

Just GET GOING!!

We can talk about tactics, business plans, marketing, taxes, motivation, but with it being a new year, you will just need to take action. The key is the Start-Up! Get out there and start building your business today.  Nature does not become STAGNANT, a tree doesn’t stop growing, stop giving to you and the earth because it feels like it or its lazy. We must not become stagnant in this new economy, we must do our part – create products and jobs for the world and then and ONLY then we will be rewarded as Entrepreneurs!
