How to Start a Handy Man or Women Business!
Now from most of my pictures and the big beard, most of you would assume, I would be sort of handyman-ish? Well, sorry to mislead you.. I can get some things done, but to rebuild a whole house. I don’t think I could..
Robert Kiyosaki- once said that if he was bankrupt and had to start over, he could rebuild his empire from starting a job at McDonalds. “It’s what you know! And how to apply the principles” So he may loose the money but not the knowledge of how he achieved it.
GIVE ME the GOODS!
Borrow your tools; there is some guy somewhere that is just letting these things build up somewhere. Possibly he may have something you may need.
Go fishing for business, everybody that is either at Lowe’s or Home Depot are potential customers. You need to put the lure out there. I would make a little flyer:
Hardcore Tactics Revealed
“Do you have the Desire to Turn that Extra Room, into a Breathtaking, Jaw-Dropping
attention getting _______” Call Jim’s Renovation’s, LLC- (number)
Those are some risky words, but it is all to impregnate in their mind so they call you when they need a room redone! Now, why would I focus on a room instead of my different handyman stuff? Well this is just one marketing piece. You should have some basic stuff as well. NOT yellow pages yet!! It is very costly to start running ads in the yellow book. Look to the local newspaper and the chamber of commerce.
Know your prices! How much does items cost down to the nail, how much would this project cost you vs this project. Do you have all the tools or do you have to rent larger equipment?
Also if there is a project that you know you don’t have the tools for- as the salesmen say “Act like you been there before” If you get a big project and you are giving your bid, know how much the rental fee for the equipment may be. To many times have I seen contractors make 100 dollars after workers are paid and the expenses are due because he or she didn’t get their facts straight before.
HOW TO START- A lot was covered above with some basic marketing but build your business plan and mission statement. I don’t care if you write it on a couple of napkins, do it! Figure out what niche you would like to focus on? Renovating Kitchens, basements, bedrooms, etc. After you figure this out before you get one job, I would start the hiring process. The great thing about this job is that you can sub-contract the work you don’t want to do, and just charge a twenty percent fee on top for your contracting fee. You will also be able to hire independent contractors instead of employees. This will save you from carrying insurance such as workers compensation, and liability.
Your main focus as a business owner is the business, not all the work and the daily grind. Let your contractors do it and you focus on getting and gaining more business. Start reading about successful franchises, how to franchise, and all business and leadership books. You never know what you will bring to this little startup and when and where you’ll finish. “Think Big, Dream Bigger, ACT on it!”
Your options are endless with this business, you can start as a part time Mr./Mrs. fix it, or you can become a full time contractor.
